A retention wall on a sewage pond gave way creating a wall of poo that killed several people. Hamas responded in the usual way by moving into the area to assist and to fire automatic weapons into the air (wtf?). A resident declared that it was their "Tsunami".
Calling it a Tsunami is grasping at straws (or toilet paper). Yes, a great disaster probably would open the flood gates (sorry) of aid to the Gaza again but I don't think this qualifies.
Supposedly, this village was to have it's sewer pond upgraded into a treatment facility but that stopped when the flow of western dollars ground to a halt after the Hamas takeover.
Germany and the US had previously been asked to resume funding of the projects because the overflow of sewage from the Gaza and West Bank was going into the Mediterranean Sea and drifting to a desalinization plant in Israel.
A quick Google search provided an interesting background on the sewer projects in Gaza. An analysis from March 04 is well worth reading. Seems that the Palestinians are fond of digging up the sewage pipes and turning them into Kassam rockets to be fired at Israel.
Once again, why does the PLO/PLF/Hamas/Palestinians always look to the West to fund their existence. Why not look East? Jordan, which has about 80% of the former Palestine could kick in and let's not forget the Saudis, the Emirates and the other oil rich Arabs. Nope, don't see them jumping in to give the Palestinians what the West took away. I just can't take the Arabs seriously when they complain about the West while they won't assist their neighbors.
By the way, if this is a disaster, where's the UN? Where's that UN Disaster Coordinator, the Norwegian guy, who's always outraged at the US no matter how much we give.
